KEEPING DUTIES IN ENGINE ROOM
Q1. What is mean by engine control
room?
ANS:
ECR is centralized location of control and automation of all the machineries
fitted in the engine room. From this room you can monitor all the engine and
machinery parameters and control the machineries and engines. You can
communicate with the bridge and other engine room personnel from here.
Q2. When you here an alarm in the
engine room, how will you know it is for?
ANS:
All engine room alarms are audio visual horn and light are different from
other. Stenciling is there blow each alarms for if source. Still you find
difficulties to find then its indicate at the alarms monitor panel in the ECR.
Q3. What can happen if the high
pressure fuel pipe starts leaking?
ANS:
Inform. Through the blanket, stop the pump and shut the valve, and keep firefighting
equipment ready.
Q4.
What are the instruments are used for finding the following.

Q5. What are the basic duties of
engine room ratio g while keeping watch?
ANS:
Check engine parameters. Keep engine room clean. Check water and sump oil level
of diesel engine. Check boiler water level and pressure. If find any
abnormalities then inform to the senior immediately.
Check
lube oil, fuel oil, fresh water and sea water pressure and temperature; lube
oil sump level, boiler water level, exhaust temperature, vibration and unused
noise, any leakage.
Q6. State some of the important
“Dos” and “Don’t” for working in the engine room.
ANS:
Always wear helmet and ear muff and keep engine room clean and tidy, stop any
leakage immediately. Do not though oily rags here and there. Do not keep paint
and chemicals in the engine room.
Q7. What checks you will carry out
while watch in generator engine
1. Lubricating
oil pressure and temperature.
2. Jacket
cooling water pressure and temperature
3. Exhaust
gas temperature
4. Fuel
oil pressure
5. Lubricating
oil sump level
6. Expansion
tank water level etc.
Q8. What engine parameters you will
observe during your watch.
1. Lubricating
oil pressure and temperature.
2. Jacket
cooling water pressure and temperature
3. Exhaust
gas temperature
4. Fuel
oil pressure
5. Lubricating
oil sump level
6. Expansion
tank water level etc.
Q9. What is a sounding tap?
ANS: It
is a steel tap to check level of the tank in meter centimeter, feet / inches
etc.
Q10. What is the meaning of sight
glass? And where you commonly find it.
ANS:
Sight glass is a glass which is fitted on the crankcase for checking the level
of sump oil. Normally fitted in air compressor and purifiers and boiler and
incinerator for flame indication.
Q11. What is mean by UMS?
ANS: Unattended machinery space
Q12. Where is steering gear
located?
ANS:
Located behind the engine room separated by a watertight door.
Q13.State
things you will check on in steering gear room.
1. Hydraulic
oil level in tank
2. Check
any leakage and vibration
3. Lube
oil level in replenishing tank
4. Steering
pump motor not running hot
5. Level
in the bilge well
6. Any
unusual sound.
Q14. What will you do if you find that crankcase
sump level come down.
