Elementary First Aid (EFA) – STCW Course

Elementary First Aid (EFA) is a mandatory subject under STCW (Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping) for all seafarers. This course equips seafarers with basic first aid knowledge and emergency response skills required on board ships when medical assistance is not immediately available.

The EFA course focuses on life-saving actions, correct first response, and basic treatment of injuries and illnesses commonly encountered at sea.

Objective of Elementary First Aid (EFA)

The main objective of the EFA course is to enable a seafarer to:

  • Take immediate action in case of accident or medical emergency

  • Apply basic first aid techniques

  • Prevent the condition of the casualty from worsening

  • Support the casualty until professional medical help is available

Importance of EFA for Seafarers

At sea, medical facilities are limited, and timely first aid can save lives. Every seafarer must be capable of handling emergencies such as:

  • Severe bleeding

  • Burns and scalds

  • Fractures and sprains

  • Unconscious casualties

  • Drowning and suffocation

  • Heart attack and shock

Elementary First Aid plays a critical role in onboard safety and survival.
