Task– Familiarization and engine room duties.

Sub Task– Identify personal protection gear and demonstrate their use.

Description– Learnt to identify the personal protective gear and what is the use of them. Personal protective equipment is always to be worn when you are working. It is most important for our safety.

Personal protective equipment onboard ships are-

TASK No. 4.1.2

Task– Familiarization and engine room duties.

Sub Task-   Engine room duties and reporting to OOW.

Description– Learn about different engine room duties and also knew how to report to Officer on the Watch. Also know what are the checks we have to do during watch keeping.

Different Duties in the engine room carried out-

1. Check the Lube oil pressure

2. Check the Water level in the boiler

3. Any abnormal sound and vibration

4. Overheating of any machine

5. Sounding of the various tanks etc.

TASK No. 4.2.1

Task–   Familiarization and engine room duties.

Sub Task– Engine room watch keeping procedures.

Description– Learnt about the complete procedure of watch keeping in engine room.

Engine room ratings on ships perform their duties in rotational shifts, each having fixed and equal number of hours. This work shift, also known as a watch, needs to be carried out in an efficient manner to ensure the safety of life and property at sea.

TASK No. 4.2.2

Task– Hand Tools & Measuring Instruments.

Sub Task- Identify different spanners by type and size. Use appropriate spanners as per the requirement.

Description-Learnt about the different types of spanners and also knew about the size of different spanners which are written on the body of the spanner. Learnt how to use them with proper safety precautions.

Description– Learnt about identification of major components of pedestal grinding machine and also about the safety precautions which are followed while operating grinding machine. Learn how to maintain pedestal grinding machine in good condition. We also learn what are the checks to be made before operating grinding machine.

Description– Learnt about the major components of hand grinder and also learnt how to change wheels using appropriate tools. Also learnt how to select grinding wheel based on the speed of grinder machine and what are the safety precautions to be followed while operating hand grinder.

Task– Drilling.

Sub Task- Identify major components of a vertical Drilling Machines.

Description– Learnt about the major components of vertical drill machine and how to fit and remove a drill bit. Also learnt about the checks to be made before operating drill machine and about the different sizes of drill bits and safety precautions to be followed while using drill machine.

Task– Lifting Tools, Equipment and Techniques.

Sub Task- Identify equipment used for lifting heavy machinery items. (Eye bolts, slings, shackles, ratchet block, and chain block).

Description– Learnt about how to identify different types of lifting equipments and how to use them. Also get to know about SWL and its marking. Also knew how to fit and remove an eye bolt and what are the checks to be made on lifting devices before using them.
