MARINE BOOK 28

GP Rating MEK questions for oral exam on Oilywater separater, Purifier, Evaporator

 FILTERS
AND PURIFIER

Q1. What are the different ways of
removing impurities on board ship?

Ans:
Impurities in the oil can be removed by purifier, line filters and water from
service and settling tank.

Q2. What is the importance of
removing impurity from fuel oil before use in a diesel engine?

Ans:
To breakdown in cylinder head, piston and liner. Engine can be stopped and cannot
start due to impurities in fuel oil.

Q3. What is the importance of
removing impurity from lubricating oil before use in a diesel engine?

Ans:
Lubricating oil should have impurities like water, solids, fuel oil/ diesel oil
mixed with it. Engine breakdown can be happen due to lubrication on bearings.

Q4. What is the use of purifier or
centrifugal separator?

Ans:
Purifier is used to remove the solid and liquid impurities from lube oil and
fuel oil.

It
works on centrifugal principle.

Q5. What is the purpose of gravity
disc in purifier?

Ans: Gravity
disc is used to create the interface between water and oil.

EVAPORATOR / FRESH WATER GENERATOR

Q1.How
fresh water is produced / made on board?

ANS:
Fresh water produced from seawater under vacuum condition at a shell
temperature 50to 60 degree C by boiling of sea water and condensing inside the
evaporator.

Q2. Do you know components of fresh
water generator?

ANS:
Components of FWG as follows

1.      Evaporator

2.      Condenser

3.      Ejector
pump

4.      Demister

5.   Salinometer

OILY WATER SEPARATER

Q1. What is the importance of oily
bilge separator on board ship?

ANS:
Oily bilge separator is separating the oil from the bilge water before water
discharge overboard at the rate of 15 PPM or below 15 PPM.

Q2. Where does the water and oil
leaking from pipes or valves collects?

ANS:
Bilge well. The bilge well has the high level alarms to prevent overflowing.

Q3. Can we pump out the oily water
over board? If not then why?

ANS No.
bilge water cannot be pump out overboard in port, coastal water, in anchorage
or in special area due to oil pollution hazards at sea. Bilge water can only
pumped out at sea through OWS at the rate of 15 PPM.

Q4. Oily water separator comes
under which annex of MARPOL.

ANS:
Annex No. 1 is regulation of prevention of pollution by oil from ships
