MARINE BOOK 28

ENGINE ROOM MACHINERY AND ENGINE

 ENGINE ROOM MACHINERY AND ENGINE

Q1. What are the duties of engine
room ratings?

Ans:

1.      Cleaning
of the engine room

2.      Monitoring
engine parameters

3.      Assist
the senior engineer for maintenance

4.      Check
the sounding of oil/ water level tanks.

5.      Drain
the settling & service tank for any water.

Q2.
Identify the components of a diesel engine. State the function of the
components.

Q3. What is the use of auxiliary
engine on board and state which type of engine is use as auxiliary engine.

Ans:
four stroke engine use as a auxiliary engine which is use to produce the
electricity on board ship.

Q4. State at least ten major
machinery items you will find in the engine room?

Ans:
Main engine, Auxiliary engine (generator), auxiliary boiler, Purifier, Air
compressor, Pumps, Incinerator, Oily water separator (OWS), Air conditioning
plant, Refrigeration plant.

Q5. Name major components of the
diesel engine.

Ans:
Piston, Cylinder liner, Cylinder head, Connecting rod, Bottom end bearing, Main
bearing, Crank shaft, Cam shaft etc.

Q6. What makes the propeller
rotates?

Ans:
propeller is connected with the main engine by tail shaft intermediate shaft
and thrust shaft. As main engine rotates propeller will also rotates.

Q7. What is the difference between
fuel oil used on ships and that diesel oil used in cars and trucks?

Ans:
The fuel oil used in diesel engine is either HFO or marine diesel oil (MDO).
the cars and trucks are running on LDO (light diesel oil) or petrol.

Q8. What is the function of
turbocharger on a diesel engine?

Ans:
Turbocharger is used to increase the intake air supply in to the cylinder with
increasing the pressure and density of the air. It running by engine exhaust
gas. And also it cleans the exhaust gas before leaving to atmosphere

Q9.
What is used to start the diesel engine onboard ship?

Ans:
Diesel engine is start by the compressed air which is known as starting air.

Q10. What is the use of fuel
injector in diesel engine?

Ans:
fuel injector is used to inject the fuel in combustion chamber at the right
time and right quantity in atomizing form.

Q11. What are the mountings of
cylinder head contain?

Ans:

i)
Cylinder head relief valve

ii)      Air
starting valve

iii)    Fuel
injector

iv)    Indicator
cock

v)      Inlet
and exhaust valve (4 stroke engines)

Q12. What is the purpose of
flywheel in diesel engine?

Ans: flywheel
is used to store the energy during the power stroke and release the same energy
during remaining stroke.

Q13. What is stroke?

Ans: The
distance travelled by the piston from TDC to BDC or vice versa, is known as
stroke.

Q14. What are the safety devices
are fitted on diesel engine?

Ans:

1)      Crank
case relief valve/ relief door

2)      Cylinder
head relief valve

3)      Oil
mist detector

4)      Turning
gear

5)      Over
speed trip

6)      Different
alarms and trips

Q15.What is the use of Crankcase
relief door?

Ans:
It is use to release the excess pressure from crankcase. It lift more than 0.5
bar working pressure inside the crankcase.

Q16. What is the use of stuffing
box in 2 stroke diesel engine?

Ans:
it us use to separate the crankcase space from scavenge space. Also it seals
the piston rod which prevents the hot gases leak into crank case.

Q17. What is scavenging?

Ans:
It is the process of supply the fresh charged air into cylinder and remove the
exhaust gas with the help of fresh air.

Q18. What is tappet clearance? How
to take it?

Ans:
The clearance between valve stem and rocker arm is known as tappet clearance.
The clearance should be for inlet valve is 0.35 mm. (depends on manufactures)

The
clearance should be for exhaust valve 0.45 mm (depends on manufactures)

For
taking the tappet clearance we used filler gauge. While taking the clearance
make sure piston should be at TDC.

VALVES

Q1.
Identify different types of valves. (Workshop)

Q2. What do you understand by
non-return valve?

Ans:
The Non-Return valve gives on way flow.

Q3. What will happen if valve is
not closing properly?

Ans:
Flow will not stop

Q4. State the importance of valve
maintenance?

Ans:
all valve should be operate easily.

Q5. State precaution to be taken during
valve maintenance.

Ans:

1)
Pipe
line should be depressurized first.

2)
New
gasket and gland packing should be used.

3)
Put
notice from where system is started.

Q6. What will you do on finding
leaky gland on a valve?

Ans:
Both nut of the gland are to be tightened equally to stop leakage. If leakage
is not stopped renew the gland packing.

Q7.
What are the different types of valves used on board ship?

Ans:
Globe valve, Butterfly valve, Gate valve, Angle valve, Ball type valve, Swing
check valve, Safety valve, Relief valve, Quick closing valve, Pressure reducing
valve.

Q8. What is the use of check valve?

Ans:
Check valve is used to prevent the back flow of liquid.

Q9. What is the use of Quick
closing valve?

Ans:
QCV is fitted on fuel oil and lube oil tanks. It is operated from outside the
engine room from remote location in case of emergency.

Q10. Why maintenance you will carry
out on Globe valve SDNR type.

ANS:
normally we are looking for the smooth operation of the valve so the following
maintenance will carry out.

1)      Renew
the gasket

2)      Renew
the gland packing

3)      Carry
out lapping

Q11. Which type of valve is used in
bilge line?

Ans:
Screw down non return valve

Q12. Which type of valve is used in
ballast system?

ANS:
Butter fly valve and gate valve

Q13. What is the purpose of
pressure reducing valve.

Ans:
It is used to reduce the pressure from high to low by setting the spring
tension.
