Marine Auxiliary Machinery

Deck Machinery introduction.

Deck machinery on board ships depends mainly on the type of ship e.g. Geared cargo ships may use derricks or cranes for cargo handling whereas self unloading vessels have hoppers and conveyors to transport the cargo. Specialized ships may have heavy lift cranes to unload the cargo. Equipment for anchor handling and mooring is common to all vessels only differs in arrangement and capacity depending on kind of vessel on which it is installed.
On Broad classification of Deck machinery is in 3 categories

1.

Anchor handling equipment – anchor windlass

2. Mooring equipment – mooring windlasses and winches
3. Cargo handling equipment – cargo winches and derrick
Deck machinery can be driven by electric power, hydraulic motor or by steam power as in the olden days. Most of this machinery is situated on deck and is exposed to hars
h conditions like salt water spray, and is liable to get corroded if it is not maintained and protected well.
